Flower wall at BHLDN for Brides Magazine

We were pretty excited when BHLDN reached out to us asking for a beautiful floral wall to act as a backdrop for their 2018 gown launch!  Personally, we think floral walls are the only kind that should be built!

A very Thankful Thanksgiving

This has been a busy year for Fleur, filled with expansion both in our retail boutique and our studio location, lots of personal growth and always learning new way to make our designs and offerings better for all our beloved guests.  There was a lot to be thankful for this past weekend. I'm a little reflective today after the holiday (Thanksgiving happens to be my favorite).  On Wednesday night we unexpectedly found out that my brother needed a pacemaker and bright and early Thanksgiving morning he was given one.  As an avid runner (He runs marathons) it was quite the surprise, and we were all thrilled when we heard that it went well and he's already feeling better.  Saturday night my Dad and Sister in Law were in a car accident after a chain of crashes ended up hitting them.  My sister in law broke her wrist and my Dad's car is totaled, but thankfully that is all that happened.

Thanksgiving was sandwiched between these two stressful events, and sitting here on my morning off work with a cup of coffee in my hand and my husband by my side I'm so incredibly grateful for my family.

I wanted to share a few photos of our Thanksgiving dinner table, and in case you didn't see my Instagram post, I wanted to retire a very important message to all of you.

I'm so thankful for all the love and support from our Logan Square neighbors and beyond.  For all the couples who trust myself and my team to be a part of their celebrations.  And so thankful and grateful to my team who inspire me every day with all their love, dedication & creativity (& tolerate my totally type A craziness).

As the holiday season approaches, I hope we're all reminded to slow down a little, take deep breaths and be kind to those around us.

XO

The Big Night at Near North Montessori 2017

It was a thrill to once again be a part of Near North Montessori's fundraiser for financial aid.  We love giving back, and especially to a wonderful school, helping kids who otherwise could not afford to attend. Held at Salvage One (One of our favorite locations), it was truly a beautiful evening!  Here are just a few snaps we took of the evening.  The palette of gold, champagne and silver is definitely one of our favorites.  Enjoy!

Flowerstock

Lately it's been so busy around here, between holidays, weddings, paperwork, end of year wrap ups, family - I don't really feel as though I have the time to update photos and fun things that have been happening.  I've been wanting to share with you some photos from one of the most fun experiences of my life - Flowerstock.  I was completely honored when Holly Chapple called and asked if I would demonstrate.  Teaching in front of a bunch of incredibly talented floral designers is no joke.  So arriving in Virginia, I felt a little nervous until my cab came upon Holly's beautiful farm.  Smiling faces, rolling hills of trees just turning color, flowers everywhere and a thrilling energy in the air.  I always feel a few jitters before standing in front of people, but this weekend I felt more confident than ever.  Friends, flowers, live music, classes, education, nature and so much more!  I think all business owners sometimes doubt ourselves during some point of our careers, and this little opportunity reminded me of how much I love my business.  Enjoy just a few photos of some of one of my favorite weekends in 2016!

Flamingo, Baby!

Just a week ago we had the pleasure of designing a tropical, Hawaiian themed baby shower for our wonderful and endlessly talented friend, Katie Jayne of Jayne Weddings!  Pink flamingo, feathery peonies and tropical blooms & foliage were the backdrop for this super happy celebration.  We even had our own 11 minute tropical rain storm, to leave us all refreshed!  Amanda Megan Miller snapped some gorgeous photos, and Elysia Root made the most incredible cake!!  We can't wait to meet Katie's little one!

Kinfolk Gathering

Just about a month ago (when the weather was significantly warmer), I was invited by my friend Amanda Jane Jones to participate in the Kinfolk Gathering dinner at Camp Wandawega.  Of course I said yes.  Dinner at my favorite place in the world, and the chef happened to be Jason Hammel from Lula Cafe.  It was an incredible night!  Here are just a few images, but check out the amazing recap from Wandawega right HERE!

But first, check out this amazing video of the night from Richard Original right in

May Madness

May brings on the onslaught of the wedding season.  So sadly my blogging falls a little behind as I place orders for weddings 2 weeks to a month out, contact all our couples to finalize details, count votive candles, clean out the vases from storage, wash them & put them back after use, meet with new clients, write proposals for a year out and sometimes send those proposals out a little later than anticipated (which I apologize to those of you whom have recently waited a little longer for a proposal from me).  Thankfully my team is amazing and so strong and witty and hard working and I could never do this without them.  This is going to be our strongest season to date !

~~~
And to those of you who come visit me in the boutique, and I stay in our production area with just a quick hello, I promise I will be social again one day (just not while I'm designing someone's wedding flowers).  Thank you for not judging me as anti-social.  XO
~~~

Here are a few images of an arrangement from a few months back that I absolutely fell in love with & took a bazillion photos of.  Enjoy!  And now at 6am I will drink my coffee and start my day writing a lovely proposal for a sweet couple we met with this week.

Dave & Kelly Marie

Last June I married the most incredible man at Camp Wandawega in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. It's kind of mind boggling to think that it was almost a year ago, because I can remember every single moment so very clearly.  I can't thank our friends and family enough for all their love and hard work.  After planning our wedding I have an entirely new love for my clients, I want them all to share the same joy that we did on June 1st.  Here are a few images from the wedding, our photographers Jaclyn Simpson and Jennifer Kathryn were absolutely amazing.

Kinfolk & West Elm

One of my favorite things about my job is having the opportunity to partner with people whom I admire.  When Amanda Jane Jones reached out to me in regards to teaching a class at West Elm for Kinfolk, I was elated.  To my surprise & excitement, she had also contacted a dear friend of mine, Sara Gasbarra of Verdura.  Sara taught the delicious task of making seasoned salt, and I showed guests how to make a little herb wreath with garden clippings or fresh herbs from the farmer's market.  The adorable Alex Steele documented the evening for us all.  Oh, and we can't forget that the most delicious treats were made with love from Floriole Bakery & Cafe.  The absolute best part of this little class was meeting the most delightful part about this evening?  The guests!  I can't talk about the attendees enough! Our attendees are what made the night so special and fun.  I loved meeting everyone and listening to their stories, their backgrounds, and I am thrilled to have kept in touch with so many of them!  Did you miss the class?  Well no worries, because we have another planned for February 27th, with plenty of details to come.  Enjoy these photos, and can't wait to see you next time!

A snowy, Saturday night reflection

It’s another snowy day and a rare Saturday night without a wedding.  I’m feeling particularly sentimental this evening, after sharing a very simple afternoon with my friend Hillary and her darling, seven week old baby boy.  We caught up after not seeing each other for months.  I really love this lady and her husband and their selflessness.  And I immediately fell in love with their little peanut of a little one.  After driving back home through another day of snowfall, life felt peaceful.

photo

I think a lot of us often wander and search and try to figure out the where’s and why’s in life.  Everyone wants to be in a better place, they judge and base comparisons against themselves and often beat themselves up over it. In life it’s so good to be aware of what is happening around you, but you can’t compare yourself to it – rather just take it in and appreciate the moment.  And the end of the day, we’re all responsible for our decisions.  We can blame, hate, hold jealousy and feel left out all we want, but it’s really up to us to make any change.  In the meantime, as you make your goals and you write them on a napkin or in a notebook or you start to lay them in stone, the one thing that is always clear is that we need to be adaptable.  In life, families, friendships, sibling and lovers – we all are constantly changing people.  Our opinions and thoughts are affected by a snowfall or a car crash, a hug or just when we wake up after a restless night.  And because of these things, the best gift we can give one another is adaptability.  And recognizing where we are in the present.

When my husband and I started to date, I would marvel at his durability throughout winter.  Admittedly, I’m a warm weather lady, and this season has tested my strength both mental and physically.  I was depressed for about 3 weeks when I found out that I have scoliosis and a lot of repair to work on with my back.  When you’re 35 years old, being told that your body isn’t doing what you want, for the very first time in your life, well, it’s a cold slap in the face.  However, to be told at 35 for the first time that something is wrong, well hell.  That’s a really great run.   After I accepted my place I started to take pleasure in new goals.  I love when I make improvements.., I’m encouraged.  My back feels better (after a year of pain), and in a way the new exercises are fun – because if you make anything in life a positive -  it can be.  But I digress (as always).

I remember my and Dave’s first winter together and he told me that the cold was a time for reflection.  This year feels so true of that. After thinking about people, challenges, happiness and reality,  my goal for 2014 – and life in general – is to work hard, stay humble and understand that we are all fighting a battle of some kind.  But also I realized tonight that one of my biggest and most personal goals for the rest of my life is being.  To be present.  It’s cold out, it’s hot out, it’s perfect.  I’m alone, I’m anxious because there are too many people around, I’m quiet, I’m screaming.  I'm gardening, it's raining on me, I'm in love, I'm angry.  I'm sad, I'm so very happy.  The great thing is that I am all of it.

Janelle & Chris!

Our very own Janelle who works with us and is the owner of the amazing Re:find Joy was wed over Labor Day weekend.  This wedding was so exciting, as we talked about it in the shop f.o.r.e.v.e.r!  Janelle, being a designer and stylist had so many fun ideas, completely trendsetting.  With her Bird & Fish theme, she gave us the full reign to design as we liked, after she told us her favorite flower choices (I mean, come ON!  I get to make whatever I want?!).  We filled up the Fleurmobile and headed on the road to Michigan!  Here are some of the photos from the crazy talented Julia Franzosa Photography, and HERE is a link to see the wedding featured on Wedding Chicks with SO many more great details!

The end of 2013 - it wasn't so unlucky, now was it?

Very early in the year a friend mentioned to me that she read an article stating (on the wedding side of the business) couples were opting not to marry in 2013 because it was deemed as bad luck.  We certainly experience the opposite of that.  Not only did two of us at Fleur tie the knot, we were attendants in weddings, wedding guests, we designed some of the most creative events to date and we came out of it all a little bit exhausted, but beyond proud of the hard work and effort of the year.

As we wrap up the last few days of our annual winter break (back open Jan. 2!), I've had some time to look at all the photos and amazing times from 2013.Don't get me wrong.  It wasn't all bliss and happy.  Sometimes the damn dahlias arrived dead, we pissed each other off, then we hugged & made up.  But overall, this was a good year.  We freaked out over amazing locally farmers with the most perfect product, we added new gift lines to the boutique (promoting as many American made products as we can find!), we can't even count how many boutonnieres we wrapped (and don't want to).  We travelled across states to design and at the end of the day, we took a deep breath and patted one another on the back.  I can't thank our friends, family, clients, customers, fans and my wonderful staff enough for 2013.  In my opinion, the luckiest year of them all.  Here are some photos of our year - hardly a start to all that happened, but enjoy!!!

This year there were many occasions when the van was packed to the brim.

Thank you again for a wonderful year.  There is no way Fleur would be here if it wasn't for all of you.  You all are the peanut butter to my jelly, the honey to  my tea.  You all keep me inspired.  Thank you to my outstanding staff who are the hardest workers, the most talented people and some of the best friends I could ever ask for.

What to expect

 I wasn't really sure what to expect this past year.  I knew 2013 was going to be big, but when you're going through the movements of each day sometimes it's hard to prepare for what exactly that means.  It truly was a good year.  I married the most amazing man, someone who was a bit of a surprise in my life, who has believed in me and loved me and laughed with me.  I often can't believe I get to be his wife.  And another Fleur family member, Janelle, married the love of her life.  Meanwhile. Amy started to plan for her dreams and Samantha joined in on the team & Caleb started graduate school while making weekly appearances in the boutique.  Dave and I bought a house with trees that make you feel as though you don't live in the city, a nook of Chicago where you can see the sky and hear the quiet.

Michigan Sky, Pure MichiganOther things happened, too.  Two members of our Fleur are dealing with cancer in their families.  The cancer has struck loved ones that they are very close with.  And it's moments like these that make you pause and remind yourself to breathe.  To stop thinking about the job, and give yourself a day to simply BE.

Pure MichiganOne of my goals this past January was to take 2013 a little bit slower.  To enjoy planning a wedding, enjoy being the bride at a wedding and enjoy the newlywed life after.  It wasn't always so easy, I am a runner when I have an idea, and thankfully Dave was there to sometimes slow me back down to a walking pace.  Summer was fast, and we were so lucky to experience such a beautiful autumn - although it was late - the leaves and flowers and branches were calming & inspiring.  Up-lifting.  There was not a single day I missed the change of colors and light.

zinnias Pure MichiganChange.  It kind of happened at a good time.  I enjoyed sunrises from my apartment window, now I enjoy sunsets from the back yard.  My coffee is tasting richer and I need less of it.  Autumn's arrival this year seemed bigger.  It's time to slow down, it's time to appreciate the leaves and the fading again.  It's nice to sit down and write down your dreams.  I'm planning for a garden in the back, and window boxes in the front.  I can see lilac & peonies and autumn anemones next year.  I'm thinking about hot chocolate and movie nights inside and walks in the winter with my husband.  I'm exciting for reorganizing the shop & our storage room with rentals.  Cleaning it out, making room for new pieces and ideas.  Mixing things up.

backyard leafI made my first arrangement in our house a few weeks back.  Half of the boxes are not unpacked, we live in a home that basically needs a gut rehab on 75% of it, but this centerpiece felt special.  With maple leaves from the yard and a surprise batch of peonies, I made a bouquet for myself, for our dining room where we will share years of meals together with friends and family.  Where we will share thoughts and conversation and laughter will echo through the walls.

Peonies & ranunculus by FleurThe peonies absolutely amazed me.  These always do.  I fall in love with their brightness and happiness, and each day they fade a touch in color.  But they're so beautiful as they go out.

peony arrangement by fleurIt's been a lot of back and forth this year.  Moving, packing, weddings, packing flowers, writing proposals, updating emails, planning events & pop ups, paying taxes.  But we're starting to reorganize at work.  I love my team of smiling badasses with their humor and snakiness and sincerity and talent.  Fleur wouldn't be anything without them.

peony centerpiece by FleurLike these flowers we're always changing and adapting.  I already know that 2014 is going to be great.

Cabin Escape

This has been a slow blog year & not for lack of photos! A whirlwind, wonderful, amazing year!  This past June I married the most amazing man, the love of my life - my greatest love.  Caleb has been finishing up his weddings and moving towards graduate school!! (no worries, he is still working part time with us, and just as excited about his upcoming weddings as ever!).  Amy just returned from a dream in California (who doesn't fall in love with the west coast!?), filled with inspiration.  And our little Janelle just tied the knot herself this past weekend in Detroit (to which the Fleur family brought out the flowers & attend!).  Meanwhile Samantha is making sure the boutique is as cute as ever and working with some couples of her own on their wedding day decor!  Things are finally settling down, and we're so excited to start sharing with you some of the photos of our amazing weddings this year!  Lots of image to come!

  Meanwhile, autumn's serenade is starting to win us over with the change of weather, rusty and orange pops of color entering the shop and soon our local pumpkins and gourds!  But first are a few photos of my annual trip to the Minnesota cabin.  A place that holds Dave's heart, and therefore has captured mine as well. A last little slice of warm, summer sunshine.  I hope you all enjoyed a beautiful Labor Day weekend.  Thank you for a wonderful summer and we can't wait to share the rest of the season with all of you!

Lily Red Studio

Yesterday, our very dear friend Suzy from Lily Red Studio received some sad news.  Her sister's home was lost due to an electrical fire.  Their home is gone along with family heirlooms, memories, baby photos and everything else they've owned.  If you can make any donations at all, especially clothing for the kids, you can find out where to at Go Fund Me.  If you have questions, contact us at the boutique, we are accepting clothing donations and will pass them onto to Suzy's family.  Thank you so very much. 6503_10151645266660306_2032976009_n

Busy, busy!

I'm not going to lie, it's been a whirlwind the last few weeks, and I really want to thank everyone for all their patience, well wishes, hard work and big smiles.  In addition to planning all our June weddings with clients, myself and Dave said "I Do", too!  June 1st we tied the knot, and we'll share photos with you when we can.  :)  For now, here is an Instagram photos from our friend Olivia Leigh.  It really was perfect in every single way.
