A day without the internet

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

This past Monday I started something new for myself.  I left my cell phone at home.  At first I felt a little anxiety (which is completely ridiculous) thinking I was missing some really important information or I wasn’t responding to emails/texts fast enough.  Also, how the hell was I going to know what time it was?  Then I realized I can just buy a cheap watch.  And the emails aren’t going anywhere and the shop is closed on Mondays.  Then I started to relax.

Davey and I were going to stop downtown and drink a coffee when we decided to stop in the Cultural Center.  He had never seen the Tiffany dome and I felt like looking at some art.  We were very excited to have stumbled upon a show about Louis Sullivan.  I felt such a connection to him and the his design aesthetic, pulling so much inspiration from nature’s mathematics and beauty.  And rather than snapping 100 photos on my camera or cell phone, I actually took it all in.  And enjoyed my time with Davey.  Enjoyed my cafe au lait as I slowly strolled around.  And just enjoyed slowing down in general.

(Sometimes I get really annoyed with technology.)

It was really wonderful to step back and think about all the places I find my inspiration.  I picked up a book on quilting and realized how much I just LOVE contrast in color.  But that’s a post for another day..

~~~
Right now I’m taking a quick break from a rather off day.  Allergies + florists always equals an interesting mixture.  The flowers are pretty gorgeous around here, however.
And because of that we get to make pretty fabulous things like this.
Lots of things going on around here, we ordered some amazing flowers for Mother’s Day such as peach and yellow parrot tulips, some of our most favorite garden roses, checkered frittilaria, lady slipper orchids, and some other beauties.  Also, wedding season is here.  I can’t think of the next weekend I have off, but I am really looking forward to how pretty it’s about to become.
Happy Earth Day! Greening your wedding!
Friday, April 22, 2011
It’s Earth Day!  We consider “being green” a lot more than just a trend.  It’s been a lifestyle for us the past nine years!
Here are a few ways we do our best to care about the planet as well as a few wedding suggestions keeping Mother Nature in mind.
Locally grown flowers  are the most wonderful kind, and when in season we use lots of them.  There are a lot of farms in Wisconsin, Indiana & Michigan (aside from Illinois) that truck into the city after an early morning harvest so we can pick the freshest blooms from them.  They come direct from the farm eliminating the middle man, extra trucking, extra packaging and extra cost there so that money goes straight to our farmer’s pockets.  Many of these farms grow all varieties of crops and do their best to offer organic or pesticide free produce, and we all know how important that is.
This gorgeous bridal bouquet designed by Caleb is comprised of all locally grown flowers.  The bride provided her own canisters as vases on the table which she then up-cycled and used in her home.
We also use lots of vintage vases and other vessels for weddings.  They’re rented and we find them while we salvage through estate sales and antique malls, therefore not contributing to the process of MAKING MORE THINGS.  They’re old, they’re pretty, we like them.  Blue mason jars, compotes, rustic boxes, milk glass, salvaged candle pillars.  Our vintage collection is entirely 2nd hand and not only helps reduce waste by reusing, it also look amazing at weddings.
You might be surprised to find out how much we love plants around here at Fleur.  And we love terrariums.  Using potted plants at weddings is a wonderful way to stay green as well as offer guests the most lovely take away gift.  See our previous post on how to create your own terrarium!
And be non traditional with your party decor!  Wheat grass is amazing!  Use lots of beeswax candles!  There are so many ideas out there, and very simple to find.
Here are a few more great links for greening your wedding: The Green Guide Bride, Eco Wedding and  The Great Green Wedding.
~~~

I also make staff a little crazy with going green.  We reuse all of our floral deliver boxes to ship your flowers to your wedding.  The leftovers are returned to our wholesaler to be reused or recycled.  This may sound a little over the top, but makes a huge difference.., we rarely use paper towels at Fleur.  We have lots and lots of rags to wipe down counters, dust, dry our hands and clean.  When they’re dirty I bring them home to launder and use eco-friendly detergent.  We also try our best to limit our water in-take (and we’re fixing that sink next week!).  All our soaps and spray cleaners are all from Seventh Generation cleaning supplies and we suggest rather than adding floral “food” to your fresh cut flowers, change the water daily and wash the vase.  Add a few ice cubes to keep bacteria from forming.

~~~
And what do I do at home?  I’m that person that guerilla-style recycles everything.  Since we don’t have the blue recycling bins in our neighborhood, Davey and I bring all our paper, plastic and glass to neighborhoods that DO have them.  We also turn off the water while we brush our teeth.  I pay most of my bills online.  We’re careful to turn off our lights when we leave rooms and I use wheat litter for Bootleg & Tippie’s litter box.
~~~

Our world is very special.  I hope you enjoy this Earth Day and every other day as well.

xo!

Spaghetti & Squash

Saturday, April 16, 2011

This is a little something pretty that we whipped up this afternoon.  It has so many things I love such as bridal veil (spirea), ranunculus, parrot tulips (it amazes me how many people actually think that parrot tulips look like they’re dying because of their frilly, feathery edges), allium and garden roses.   It’s comfortable filled out with some hydrangea.

~~~
But what I really want to tell you about tonight is the dinner I made for myself.  Last night after returning from Lake Geneva’s adorable Chapel by the Spring, I roasted 2 butternut squash with garlic hoping to serve them over quinoa.  However, the only package of quinoa I had left was a bit *ahem* old, and I was tired and left the squash for later while I fell asleep working on a crossword.
~~~

Upon coming home after an expectedly long and unexpectedly incredibly pleasant day I was starving.  So I carved out the squash and garlic and mixed them in a bowl.  I chopped 1/2 a shallot and sauteed it with a little more garlic (I apologize now to whomever will have to run on the treadmill next to me tomorrow morning).  Added some paprika, garam masala, the infamous S & P, and added it to spaghetti.  I even toasted a few walnut and topped it all off with a Spanish manchego-like cheese.  My photo below doesn’t really do these tastes justice.  It’s nothing exciting, for some reason I’m super excited about it.

The thunder just began.  What’s that they say about April showers bring May flowers?

Chapel by the Spring

Thursday, April 14, 2011

Technically today is still my day off.  It’s the last day of my vacation, but I can’t wait to show the images of the most perfect, little boutique hotel that Davey I rented the past four days.  This is Chapel by the Spring, quite possibly the most wonderful little over night getaway I have ever stayed at.

We arrived Sunday evening, armed with a bottle of champagne, a cribbage board and no idea of the charm that was awaiting us.  The first 30 minutes we could do nothing but roam around, peeking into all the nooks and crannies this little chapel has to offer.  Kym, the owner, has such an incredible design aesthetic and with the dark sky and the lights from the lamps and chandeliers illuminating the stained glass windows, we were immediately filled with warmth and comfort.

Our first night provided an even more exciting surprise, a spectacular lightening and thunderstorm!  Normally it takes days for the city to leave my system.  That wasn’t the case this time.

One of the greatest amenities about this chapel is the full kitchen.  Nothing makes me happier than homemade meals, laughing, talking, listening… We played uno and cribbage while cooking and sipping champagne.  We also bought the banjo and guitar out to the grass and watched the birds in the trees and the rabbit hop around the back.

Each morning we brewed tea while planning out our excursions of the day.  Driving around the countryside, an afternoon of bowling, going to Milwaukee for some brats just to come back again.  Davey afforded me all the time I wanted to antique with a promise of a beer (or two) at the local roadhouse around the corner (Spotted Cow!).  He found himself a new accordion, and I picked up quite a few new items for the storefront.  And maybe, perhaps, began a new collection of vintage items for weddings…

Our plan is quite simple.  Return to this chapel as often as time affords us.  It was so quiet, so relaxing and peaceful.  We moved at ease and reminded ourselves how important time spent together is.

This chapel, as much as I don’t want to share it, can be rented for so many events!  I picture the most perfect bridal shower here!  Or a bachelorette getaway.  It can also be rented for petite and intimate weddings.  Or a girl’s weekend away.  And most definitely a little romantic escape for any couple needing some time to remember what it’s all about. I’m closing my laptop for now.  I still have a few hours left to enjoy the peace and happiness I brought home with me from Wisconsin.

choir loft dreaming

Sunday, April 10, 2011

Sometimes I’m slightly annoyed when people proclaim how much they dislike carnations.  Look at these beauties, with their antiqued color.  And they smell fabulous.  When I was a little girl and my mother took me into flower shops to order this or pick up that, the strongest scent I always noticed was the spicy carnation.  They’re so familiar to me.  We even planted them in the garden (Mom allotted me a small area that I could grow anything I wanted.  It was always overgrown with mint and herbs and white roses and peonies).  I LOVED them as a little girl and was beyond crushed when the rabbits came and ate them all.

Today is a good day.  I am actually for once (and certainly not for long) caught up on every single estimate, email and phone call.  And it’s 80 degrees outside and tonight I leave for a little pre-wedding season vacation.  Tonight we’re sleeping in a choir loft and tomorrow we’ll wake to a rain storm.  We’ve packed tea, uno and cribbage.  The guitar and banjo are tuned.  I’ve kissed Bootleg & Tippie kitten 100 times and packed my bag.  See you all on Friday.

Kim & Andrew

Saturday, April 9, 2011

Here are some lovely photos from Jason Kaczorowski of Kim & Andrew’s very sweet wedding.  Kim *loves* marguerite daisies and they were beautifully incorporated into her bridal bouquet.

I love all the billy balls popping around!

~~~~~~
The centerpieces were trays of wheat grass with a floating candle tucked inside and little billy balls popping out around it.
They were just incredibly fun and whimsical and beautiful.
Congratulations to Kim & Andrew!
This morning the green fists of the peonies are getting ready to break my heart as the sun rises,
Saturday, April 9, 2011
Peonies are one of my most favorite flowers out there.  Alongside mimosa, helleborus, dogwood blossoms, checkered frittilaria… the list can go on and on.  However today is for the peony.
I think the only thing I dislike about my home is that I have no garden space.  Should there be some I would grow so many varieties of these beauties.  Yellow are one of my favorites, and last year I bought my Mom “High Noon” from Cricket Hill Gardens for Mother’s Day.  I’ve also begun my daydream of retiring one day to a peony farm raising tree and herbaceous varieties.
Every spring there are always a few blooms of these beauties resting in bud vases around our home.  I want someone to find me the true peony fragrance that I can wear.  Something so true and pure filled with natural herbs and botanicals that Victorian ladies used to wear.
Their beauty and short season has them associated with many myths.  They’ve cured diseases and lured forlorned lovers.  The traditional floral symbol of China has portrayed them into many forms of art including lavish tapestries and beautiful paintings.  They’re simply exquisite.
I’m really excited that they’re now more available at the market.  You’re going to be seeing a lot of them this year in deliveries, bridal bouquets and centerpieces.  I can’t wait to see them all!
Bon anniversaire!
Today is Fleur’s 9th birthday.  It really amazes me that it’s been this long with a lot of ups & fair share of downs, but somehow we’ve really come a long way.
