Five Years and Counting

Wednesday, September 29, 2010

The most wonderful part of my job is that I am surrounded by people in love.  And occasionally it’s just just newlyweds.  My friend Jessie recently asked my help to stylize a photo shoot celebrating her and her husband’s five year anniversary.

Naturally I was beyond honored by their request and was so excited to once again work alongside Jaclyn Simpson and Jennifer Kathryn.  In addition, special custom designed paper treats were included from Suzy the talented designer at Lily Red Design.

The details were quite endless.  Jessie and Eric read their original vows to one another, while standing under a canopy of lace, string, twine and ribbon (Eric proposed with a piece of string) and atop a beautiful Persian rug.., a wedding gift.  They brought a basket of items representing time during the past five years including their wedding album.   There was a picnic.  Trees represented wood, the traditional wedding gift of five years.

Jessie held a bouquet including thistle, one of Eric’s favorites, tucked among oak leaf hydrangea, acorns and billy balls.

Rosemary was included and the ribbon treatment was finished with twine.

Jessie and Eric were married on a cotton plantation, under a pecan tree.  Naturally, some cotton in his boutonniere was necessary.

Eric and Jessie are two people I met via the wedding industry.  We’ve become good friends, and I always look so forward to spending time with them.  Their joy for one another and delight in simplicity is inspiring.  Their hard work and devotion towards one another and their dear friends and family around them is outstanding.  And their sense of humor and love for life is infectious.

I was moved when asked to be a part of this afternoon.

Thank you, Eric and Jessie, and congratulations on five beautiful years, and here is to many, many more.

xo!

Autumn has arrived in Chicago

Sunday, September 26, 2010

It’s chilly outside and the other night I closed the majority of the windows in the apartment.  Partially because it was cold, and partially because Tippie Junebug kitten has managed to tear the screens out of three windows (sigh..).  Since I listened to a Radiolab podcast about cats falling out of windows, I don’t want that to happen (even though statistics show that 3 stories and she’ll be just fine).  And.., I can wear jackets in the autumn.  I love jackets.

I wish I had a better lens for my camera.  I’m going to spend the winter researching them, and hopefully purchase one in the spring.  I have a Nikon D80.  Any suggestions?  So I can take nice close ups of these pretty things.

I’m kind of all over the place today.  I started to work out again.  I didn’t sleep well.  I’m beginning to re-enjoy stout beers (I learned that I like whiskey barrel aged stouts!).  I like underwear shopping.  I want to plan a dinner party.  And a Halloween party.  I need to decide what I am going to dress up as for Halloween.

Tonight I am making butternut squash with acorns and goat cheese and maybe some red pepper flakes over quinoa for dinner.  I might drink a stout beer, or we might walk over to Bar Deville for a Manhatten.  Hopefully we’ll take that walk so I can wear my jacket.  It’s a toggle.  It’s cute.  And tomorrow we’re going apple picking.  And I’m picking up a whole lotta’ gnarly pumpkins and gourds.

We have a lot of cute things in the shop right now.  Aprons, candles, cards, tins filled with adorable postcards, letterpress calendars, and of course, our I <3 Logan Square and I<3 Chicago cards.

Do you like little baby lambs?  You should check out this amazing little B&B in Missouri.  My friend Hilary’s parent’s own it and their sheep just gave birth to triplets.

~~~
And do you like dancing dogs?  Of course you do.
Happy Sunday, I’ll see you on Tuesday.
Classic
Wednesday, September 22, 2010
Sometimes you just can’t beat a classic autumn bouquet.  Caleb designed this timeless beauty.
The bouts are pretty sharp, too.  The bridesmaids were equally as beautiful, but I accidentally deleted them from the camera!  Boo.
A moment after the weekend
Tuesday, September 21, 2010
We have so many beautiful things to share with you after this past weekend, I can’t wait.  Each wedding was so completely different and so representative of my lovely couples that I worked with.  First, I will share with you Pip and Brian, who were wed on Sunday, September 19th 2010.
As a friend, I was completely honored when Pip called and asked me to help her with the flowers.  I love her style and the colors she chose are outstanding.  This celebration was so sincere and simple, I knew that as I sat waiting for the procession to begin down the aisle and read the poem her father wrote that was on the back of the program that I was in trouble.  My eyes began to well.
I was a little taken by their incorporation of the importance of family.  Roots, heritage, love, and the future.  The story of how they met down to the proposal.  Their words describing their emotions towards one another.  Pip and Brian could *not* take their eyes off one another.  They were glowing.  The entire day, the entire night.
There are lots of details about this wedding that I want to share, but you are just going to have to wait for now.   Not even just photos, my overall thoughts and words on how this one has stayed with me.  Being surrounded by people in love is something quite special.  Something that should not be taken for granted.
Soon there will be more to say, but in the meantime, heartfelt joy and congratulations to Pip and Brian!!  I can’t wait to hear your stories of the honeymoon.  Enjoy your new lives together as newlyweds!!
Sleepy post
Friday, September 17, 2010
Last night I dreamt that I lived one block away from the beach.  It may have been Lake Michigan, or perhaps an ocean.  I’m not entirely sure, but the neighborhood I lived in was filled with massive homes.  Each was different and the architecture was beautiful.  Glass windows, dark wood, interesting carvings and motifs.   Very old.  Very tall trees.   There was a house that doubled as an antique shop as well (although it appeared abandoned).
Throughout the dream I was mildly frustrated because I didn’t feel as though I belonged.  So I started to walk around and that’s when the beach was discovered.  There were a lot of people sitting, reading, sunning, chatting.  The sky & water were very blue.  Kind of a french blue and a robin’s egg blue and everyone was wearing a shade of blue but the sand was definitely more of a cornstarch color.  Anway.., as soon as I saw the beach I liked the neighborhood I lived in because I realized that
I COULD GO TO THE BEACH EVERY SINGLE DAY BEFORE WORK!!
I even rationalized this in my dream.  I *needed* the water for balance, because I am a fire sign.   Half an hour, every morning, I would sit in the sand and ~relax~ before I went anywhere.
In this same dream I also was a geologist.  I was sifting through the sand and collecting many different geodes.  And discussing limestone.  And in my dream, limestone reminded of “The Never Ending Story.”  I didn’t examine specimens for very long, but it was extremely satisfying.  Notebooks were filled with information and bowls of rock sorted.
I also dreamt about a spider web, a large one.  Actually many, in a massive yard.  I didn’t like that part of the dream, although admittedly, they were quite beautiful and glimmered as though wet.  My “R.E.M.-self” should have rationalized that they were actually just beautiful yards of lace.
~~~

These blurry photos are from Lula Cafe, one of my very favorite restaurants.  Logan Square Auditorium houses the both of us.  You should try dinner there sometime.  Brunch is particularly yummy as well.  And their flowers are nice, too.  ;)

(And I met my beau there…)

They’re also part of Nightwood , where I ate on Monday.

But now I’m completely ready for some sleep.., after I read a little first.  If I can, I’m becoming a bit delusional (I’m tired)  Floundering between the dining room and kitchen I’m going to pour a glass of water.  I am, possibly for the first time in 8.5 years, caught up on ALL my emails, ALL my estimates, ALL my proposals.  And I will remain so until I wake up in the morning.  By then the mailbox will be full (and I’m expecting a coupla’ 2-3 couples to be kinda (super) excited about what is in *their* mailboxes).  So I leave you with one more image that kinda sums up how I am feeling (I brought these flowers home for myself tonight).  Blurry cuz I’m sleepy, but filled with thoughts of colors, textures and things that grow.  Not bad.., I bet I’m going to dreamt something pleasant, once again.

happiness

Thursday, September 16, 2010

There are a lot of things that can make me pretty darn happy.  For example, when Davey suggested we call my parents to share dinner together (we totally gorged at Nightwood.  It was kind of stupid-delicious how much food we ate!  And you should stop in to see our flowers.., aside from the food).  And then there are pictures of the kitties.  I mean, seriously.  This is my life.

And sometimes I’m just struck by beauty.  Like these dahlias.  They’re kinda special.

Those dahlias are bigger than a steak burrito and way more exciting, too.  We’re getting more in tomorrow, for some of this weekend’s weddings.

Peach and grey are such a fantastic color pairing.  Grey in general really seems to be huge everywhere.  In fact, I was just looking at fabric to sew new curtains in the dining room that was grey with accents of robin’s egg blue and a certain kind of yellow.  Seven and a half yards were needed and they didn’t have enough, sadly.

Wallpaper or fabric that resembled this bouquet might be kinda wonderful.  And what an incredible and fun job.  Oh no.., I’m adding another thing to the life list….

This is all for tonight.  I’m sleepy, and I have a rule that I do not work on the computer for half an hour before I go to sleep.  The last two nights I didn’t sleep well because of a few paranoid dreams I’m attributing to mine and Davey’s Sunday viewing of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” with Kiefer Sutherland’s dad (really great film!!).  So tonight I’m finishing the crossword and reading a book.  Sweet dreams, everyone!

x0!

Early autumn color

Thursday, September 16, 2010

Early autumn is such a funny time of year.  Yesterday I wore a dress and I was too cold.  Today I wore jeans and a three quarter length short and was far too warm.  This afternoon I bought a dress that can be layered for a wedding I am attending on Sunday.  Fashion is at it’s absolute best in the autumn, and some might argue the same is the case for flowers.  The tones are deeper, jewel-toned, vibrant and outstanding.  I was reminded yesterday while flipping through Real Simple magazine that the reason leaves change colors is because of the pigment, anthocynin (cool weather combined with sunlight, etc, etc…).  And last weekend we worked on Melissa and Joe’s wedding that truly felt  to be the perfect “say goodbye to summer and hello to autumn” tribute in floral form!

The colors are just so outstanding and vibrant, so beautiful and lush.  The bridal bouquet was compact and simply stunning.

And the bridesmaid’s bouquets were beautiful as well.  You can’t tell from these photos, but those dahlias are absolutely incredible.  They’re locally grown too, which makes us all a teeny bit happier.

We didn’t have time to snap photos of the centerpieces.  They were beautiful.  The low vases were quite similar to the bridesmaids and the talls were filled with orchids and hanging votives.  I’m excited to see the professional images.  I’m also just excited for autumn in general.  Darker skies are not too exciting at 8:00pm, however the colors, textures and nature’s overall pattern in the fall is absolutely incredible.

In any case.., this wedding was gorgeous.  An adorable couple, colors that pop, and a beautiful early autumn afternoon.

Congratulations to Melissa and Joe!

Feathers!

Friday, September 10, 2010

Last weekend we celebrated three weddings and three completely different styles.  I also worked with some great photographers who will have better images than me, but for now I thought you might like to see this rather glamourous, 20’s inspired bouquet.  The story to this bride and groom is kinda charming.  Leanne and Phil told all their friends that they were eloping to avoid stress from the planning process with the promise of a large party upon their return.  Then they went on a vacation together to some far off, tropical isle.  But there was no far away marriage.  Rather, Leanne and Phil planned a surprise wedding at The Rookery.  The couple’s parents and bridal party were the only ones that knew.  Two hundred guests awaited their appearance after a cocktail or two and then the bride and groom walked down the amazing staircase straight towards and officiant.  They were wed among their closest friends, in a beautiful building and it was all a sweet surprise.

I’m completely tickled by this groom’s bout right here.  So very cute!  Laura made it!  Okay, now I have to get to work.  There are meetings today and we’re making everything for Melissa and Joe tomorrow.  I only have 25 minutes to enjoy a few minutes of quiet morning time, sipping my green tea that Davey brought me home from London.
