Billy & Amanda

Saturday, July 31, 2010
Billy & Amanda are some very dear friends of mine.
This past spring they were wed in Red Rock, Nevada.
Everything about this wedding was beautiful,
simple and so well done.
The flowers were shipped out with our
little caravan of friends and made the afternoon before.
These are just a few images from friend and
photographer, Dave Neville.
Because we have "that" kind of sense of humor, Amanda
and I agreed that Billy's boutonniere needed to have some
Billy Ball's included. Billy Balls are also
called caspedia. There is no nice way about them.
Billy & Amanda love to fish, so we included little fishing flies
into the boutonnieres.
Amanda's bouquet was kept in the ice bucket while we
drove out to the desert in a limo, while sipping
champagne.  Because that's just
the way we roll.
The starkness and simplicity of the two small ceremony
arrangements was a really great accent to the
gorgeous and vast landscape.
Congratulations to Billy and Amanda!

I am experiencing some distracting
desires to move all the furniture around in
the living and dining room.
Instead I'm going to meet my girls
Jaclyn and Jessie in
a little bit to discuss our next little
collaboration.

Art & nature & stuff

Sunday, July 25, 2010
I'm trying to grow my hair out.
It's a painful endeavor, continually teaching me patience.
Luckily there is Susan at Sparrow.
Last week when I was sitting in the salon I picked up a copy of
Ernst Haeckel's Art Forms in Nature
(A MUCH better read than the average US magazine.., even though I
do enjoy reading about Lady Gaga from time to time).
I can pour over books like this for hours,
they are absolutely stunning.
The colors and intricacies of design blow me away.
So after my haircut, I ran home to look at my copy of
Albertus Seba's Cabinet of Curiosities.
I LOVE this book. It's large, and heavy with pull out pages.
Filled with perfectly odd creatures and shapes.
And stunning designs, so mosaic like.
The octopi, the seashells and the flowers...
Skimming though this reminded me also of when Dave's
Mom was just in
town and we visited the Shedd Aquarium.
In all honestly, this post really isn't about anything
other than sharing with you shapes and textures and colors and
books and things I like.
Like seahorses and coral and weird Lovecraftian shapes.
(Although I do also love the Tour de France, wine,
baguettes and lavender,
that is neither here nor there and for some other day).

Brian & Pip’s engagement session.

Sunday, July 25, 2010
I can't just yet share all the goodies on this shoot,
but it would truly be a crime if I kept them from you!
If these two are not in love, I give up on the
entire world.
  Jaclyn Simpson & Jenn Gaudreau took these photos of
Brian and Pip. This team is amazing!
We had a wonderful day and the inspiration from
everyone was just revitalizing.
 The shoot took place at Videnovich Farms
(I receive their farm share box,
it's wonderful and you should visit them at their
farmer's markets).
It was bliss. Hanging around a vineyard, herb garden, sheep,
cherry trees.., my heart is hurting just thinking about it.
Wait until you see all the rest.
But you have to wait for them.
It's always nice to have something to look forward to!

Otto Rascon Photography

Friday, July 23, 2010
Just about a week ago I was able to meet with
Otto Rascon.
He was the photographer for a beautiful & simple wedding
that Caleb created.
Here are some of the images Otto shared with us!
The pictures are just beautiful, he really captured the
whimsy and summery look of the bouquets.
And Otto is just really wonderful to be around. I love his
stories of when he was a wee lad taking photos in Logan Square!
He also shares some pretty adorable stories of his
daughter, who is obviously his little joy!
-------------------------
 I also have to say, Caleb did an incredible job on these bouquets.
There will be a post all about him, coming soon.

Sneaks & Peeks!

Saturday, July 17, 2010
Maybe you remember me telling you about the
Eleven Eleven Wedding.
Although I've been quiet on this blog about it,
the planning process has certainly been nothing
short of exciting, emotional and filled with delight!
We just met with Amanda and Mike (the winners)
for their centerpiece mock up & I don't want to ruin
the overall surprise of the table setting,
but here is a little sneak peak!
We're also including blue mason jars
& mercury glass votive holders.
In other news, I just began reading Little, Big.
I'm excited for some fiction, it's time to move
back into that realm.

Blueberry crisp

Saturday, July 17, 2010
To welcome Davey back home from a short visit
back to Minnesota, I decided to surprise him with
a blueberry crisp.
The blueberries are from Michigan (where I spent
a large portion of my childhood during the
summers) and are just now starting to come into season!
I don't fancy myself a baker, rather cooking is my deal.
But every now and then the urge overcomes me and I
have to rush to the market on the corner because
there is no flour in the jar, or somehow our sugar bowl
is empty.
But on warm summer nights like this, it certainly comes in handy
to have a cold bowl of blueberry crisp and
some ice cream on top
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(p.s.  that ice cream is from Nice Cream & if you haven't
yet tried it, you don't know what you're missing!)
Simply Jessie Photography
Friday, July 16, 2010
Last week my new friend Jessie stopped by the flower shop.
We ate breakfast at Lula and talked about some of
our favorite things which include botanicals, travels and
a love for heat and humidity (a comment I retracted last night!).
She snapped some beautiful photos
and interviewed me, which you can read about here.
Here are a few of the photos (but peek at her blog for the rest!).
It's funny to have the camera aimed at me.  I know that
everyone is their own worst critic and poor Jessie had
to keep reminding me to smile!
 Jessie's family is from New York, but she grew up in
Alabama, allowing her the perfect combination of East
Coast sass and Southern charm!
She teams up with her husband, Eric, whom we joked that
he puts the 'E' in JessiE!
They're both so much fun to work with!
Fond of antiques, cat lovers and one day Jessie jokes she
will start a hop farm, Eric will brew beer, and I'll have the
bed & breakfast down the block that you can stay in for
the night.  Of course, the barn that is next door will be available
to rent for your wedding, and guess who your florist
and photographers will be...
Please also look at the stunning photos from this
secret wedding that she took.
I'm not kidding, I shed a tear when she described
the day to me!
Mon-day-off
Monday, July 12, 2010
A day off, especially during wedding season is a
treat and a rare case.  After eight years I am
increasingly unapologetic about turning my cell phone
off and not answering any email on Sundays and Mondays.
 This allows for me to enjoy a glass of wine,
linguini and clams, and the time to
actually finish a book.
The two day break (which actually is usually just
one and a half days) and rest also
allow for me to sleep and once again become excited about
bouquets like this:
This dramatic bridal bouquet is filled with such
lovely texture and color.
A touch of rosemary for remembrance, lavender for fragrance and
pink garden roses for the bride's favorite color.
 Summer wildflowers in the midwest are just outstanding.
The bridesmaid's bouquets were soft and dreamy, in
the palette of pale yellow, chocolate and sage.
Centerpieces matched and were arranged in
mercury glass.
~~~
Now there you are. Enjoy that because they're beautiful.
And now I am off to continue enjoying my Monday off.
My bestest friend ever is moving away, and
we need to catch up with a dinner, a glass of wine
and a teardrop goodbye.

Summer bliss

Friday, July 9, 2010

I've reached the point of summer excitement.
It's no fun when the only
bit of summer joy is just in a vase on
your dining room table.
Wildflowers are for running among,
in a field, not just drinking
out of the milk glass on the mantle.
To start things off, Davey and I split a tub of
lavender-honey ice cream.
There are blueberries from Michigan
in the fridge, and once the heat cools down
they will be baked in pie crust with orange zest.
Although tomorrow morning
some will accidentally find their way
into my yogurt for breakfast.
And last night we watched a (free!!) horror movie
double feature at The Music Box .
You MUST watch REC 1 and REC 2 if you like summer scares!
Whoa.  Popcorn and  movies on a steamy sumer night = BLISS!
And there are some day trips planned for
the dunes.  I want tan lines on my toes
from my sandals, sand on my skin and
the sunshine to call new freckles.
A trip to Minnesota for a few days is
planned to visit with Davey's family.
LAKE LYFE.
I should have that tattooed on Old English on my back.
(Don't worry Mom, I am not going to do that).
************************************
I am ready for some picnics with
peach and arugula salad,
tuna salad sandwiches,
and laying lazily on a blanket
in the shade.
Making sun tea on the porch and watching the
cardinals and robins sing.
And a few more walks around the
 Ukrainian Village gardens.
And a camping trip for two nights
with kayaking during the day
and star gazing at night.
Summer is a pretty fine time.
xo!
